The Berg family dealerships had their start in about 1917, when August T. Berg left the family homestead at McIntosh, Minnesota to settle in Bainville, Montana. There he opened the “Motor Mart.” He sold Brisco automobiles there, but the lakes and woods of Minnesota drew him back to his home state.
He opened a garage in McIntosh, Minnesota: Berg Hupmobile Co. There he sold a lot of “Hupps” but took on other franchises too, including Willys Knight, Hudson Essix, Buick, Willys, and finally Chrysler-Plymouth in about 1925.
A.T. Berg’s dealership was under the Corwin-Churchill, Fargo North Dakota Distributorship.
In 1937 his son, Chester T. Berg, became a Chrysler-Plymouth dealer in Gonvick, Minnesota, under Holt Motor. There he remained a Chrysler dealer for 35 years. During those years he was franchised with Triumph, BMC, and DeSoto. Then in 1966 he signed for Toyota also.
In 1972 Chester T. Berg became an exclusive Toyota dealer.
In 1985 Chester T. sold out to his son, Chester D. Berg, who now has sole ownership of Chester Berg Toyota, Bemidji, Minnesota.
